Whenever we hear the term 'The Doors", the first thing that comes in to our mind is the person lean and lank with long hair. Yes, the legendary Jim Morrison. The Doors was formed by Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek(keyboardist) in July 1965 in Los Angels, California when they coincidentally met with each other. Morrison told Manzarek he had been writing songs and, with Manzarek's encouragement, sang "Moonlight Drive". Impressed by Morrison's lyrics, Manzarek suggested they form a band. Other band members, drummer John Densmore, and guitarist Robby Krieger joined the band later on.. The band took its name from Aldous Huxley's book "The Doors of Perception". Their first album was "The Doors", named after their own band, released in January 1967.
Of all the most controversial rock bands of 1960s, The Doors were on the hit list, due mostly to Morrison's wild, poetic lyrics and charismatic but unpredictable stage persona. Actually Jim Morrison was the first rock artist to be apprehended on stage in a widely known New Haven Incident. Further, The Doors gave the most controversial performance of their career, one that nearly "derailed the band" on March 1, 1969, at the Dinner Key Auditorium (Miami, Florida). After Morrison's death in 1971, the remaining members continued as a trio until finally disbanding in 1973.
Though active career of The Doors came to halt in 1973, their popularity didn't stop flourishing. They had recorded more than a half dozen albums which sold over 32.5 million copies in the US alone and 90 million worldwide. Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger continued to tour as Manzarek-Krieger, performing Doors songs exclusively. Their three of studio albums, The Doors (1967), L.A. Woman (1971) and Strange Days (1967), were featured in the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, at positions 42, 362 and 407 respectively. In 1993, The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
